Ryo Arai Exhibition @ ICN Gallery

Origin of Cool: UK

I came across Ryo Arai’s exhibition at the ICN gallery in Shoreditch by chance but how lucky I was. I met the lovely Yulia Herzog, the ICN Gallery Manager who told me Ryo Arai was there the evening I visited.

It was a pleasure to talk to Ryo using Yulia as a translator and he told me about his influences and inspiration. What is fascinating is that there is only one person in the world who makes the paper used for hariko and as a result, Ryo is thinking of making this so he can use it in his work.

Both hariko (traditional Japanese paper mâché) and netsuke (a traditional miniature carving) are specialty carving techniques whose roots date back to the Edo period. This exhibit features Ryo Arai’s “Yokai Hariko” series works.

If you are a Hayao Miyazaki fan and want to learn a bit about Japanese history, this is a must see. The exhibition runs until 19th November.

Arigato gozaimasu to Ryo and Yulia!
